Weather Prep Week: Safe Rooms

Published at October 03 2024 by JFord

The other night we indulged in a little bit of a fall tradition in our house. We sat down together and watched “Hocus Pocus". I love that movie. It makes me so nostalgic for my childhood and just gets me in the mood for fall and trick or treating. (The same thing with “White Christmas" for December.) One thing that I am super envious of in the movie is the fall foliage and what seems to be nice cool weather for Halloween.

Here in the South we are more likely to get tornadoes and thunderstorms than we are to have the trees turning yellow and the air to be cooler. It was 95 degrees here yesterday. (Can we please just give up on the heat?) A couple of years ago there was tornado that blew up while the kids were out trick or treating. Its something that we have to keep in mind. And the best way to make sure your family is safe during a severe weather situation is to have a safe room.

Great Plans with Safe Rooms

A safe room is simply a reinforced room that is either in the basement or on the first floor of a home that gives you a safe place to be during bad weather. It lessens your chances of any severe weather harming you or your family.

Here at Nelson Design Group we have lots of plans with safe rooms. So, I went through and I picked some of the best of the best to show you.

Ridgewood Cove (SMN 1021)

This house plan is deceptively large. It gives you nearly 4,000 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths and 1 half bath. This plan also features a 2-car garage. This house plan gives you plenty of curb appeal with a wonderful rustic style exterior. Not only do you get a safe room with this home, but you also have a large master suite and a study with a huge walk-in closet on the first floor. Be sure to check out the photos of this great plan on our website. Thank you to our happy homeowners for the lovely pictures!

This plan has a gorgeous rustic look to it that just makes you take notice. While the home may appear small from the outside, it sure packs a punch on the inside. You might even say that its “bigger on the inside." (Sorry, I love Doctor Who.)

As you enter the home from the covered porch, the first thing that you notice is that the porch has some lovely rustic accents. Not only does it have great stonework columns, but it also has a gorgeous vaulted ceiling. This gives your guests the feeling of entering somewhere grand.

You step into the home and find yourself in the foyer. This room features the large double doors leading to the front of the home as well as the stairs that take you to the basement of the plan. The foyer is part of an open floor plan that includes the foyer, great room, kitchen and dining room.

All of these rooms blend seamlessly together giving the illusion of a grand space. The great room features a large corner stonework fireplace. Because what is a rustic style home without one? The great room also leads out to the covered porch on the rear of the home.

The covered porch continues the theme of the home with stonework columns and a vaulted ceiling. Stepping back into the home, you find yourself in the kitchen. The kitchen features not one, but two islands in the middle of the space. This gives you plenty of room for seating and prep and cuts down on how far you have to walk around it.

The kitchen also features a large “L" shaped countertop with room to spare. The dining room rounds out this portion of the open floor plan and gives you plenty of natural light with windows on two of the walls. This is another key characteristic of the rustic design.

Moving further into the home, you find yourself in a long hallway. This hallway runs all the way to the garage and gives you a great way to bring groceries into the home. This hallway features a lovely little nook with hanging storage and a bench that can be used as a mudroom.

From this hallway you can access the hall half bath. The hallway also runs to the study with its large walk-in closet as well as to the large laundry room which features a large sink for soaking garments as well as an exit to a small porch on the side of the home that would be perfect for air drying smaller garments.

The other side of the plan features the master suite. The first thing that you notice about the master suite is that if gives you a very high ceiling with a double casement window facing the front of the home. The master bath gives you his and her sinks as well as a large corner shower and a whirlpool tub. There is also a large walk-in closet to handle all of your shopping trips.

Moving downstairs to the basement, you will find an informal living area with a secondary kitchen that is perfect for making snacks. You will also find bedrooms 1, 2 and 3. Bedroom 1 is nestled on the other side of the living area and right next to the large safe room. This bedroom features a large walk-in closet and has access to the hall bathroom.

Bedrooms 2 and 3 share a jack and jill style bathroom. There is also a large storage area here in the basement.

This rustic style home gives you just over 3,700 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms, 4 full baths and 1 half bath. This house plan also features a 3-car garage for your motorized babies. Not only does this gorgeous house plan give you a safe room, but it also features a large guest room with its own in-suite bathroom!

This home gives you all of the rustic feels. It has the most beautiful columns out in front of the home with the covered porch and the front of the attached garage. These stonework columns give your home great curb appeal.

As you enter the home through the covered front porch, you find yourself in the foyer. This is a traditional foyer that gives you a space to keep out the elements as you come into the home. From the foyer, you can step to your left to the guest room.

The guest room features a lovely vaulted ceiling and a large double casement window facing the front of the home. The guest room also has its own in-suite bathroom. This gives your guests privacy, or it can be used as a fifth bedroom.

From the foyer you can step into the open floor plan that encompasses the great room, dining area and kitchen. This large open area is reminiscent of the old Viking long houses. This room is given character with a vaulted ceiling and faux beams. The great room features a large stonework fireplace on one end of this space.

On the rear wall of the space you will find large windows and French doors opening to the outdoor living area. The dining area is nestled in between the great room and the kitchen. While the kitchen gives you a large center island with bar seating for six as well as a French door opening to the laundry room/mudroom.

On the other side of the plan you will find the master suite. The large master bedroom gives you a private entrance to the outside living area and a large picture window facing the rear of the home. The master bath features double sinks, a whirlpool tub and a shower as well as a large walk-in closet.

The walk out basement gives you a large media and game room that features a large stonework fireplace and an entrance to the covered patio. Here you will find Bedroom 2 with a large closet and access to the bathroom that can double as a safe room. There is also a second master suite that is the duplicate of the one on the first floor.

The basement also features a large safe room that is perfect to be used as a storage area when the weather is not being fickle.

This home gives you a sprawling floor plan that is perfect for growing families. This house plan features a large outdoor living space as well as an enormous master bathroom with its own saferoom.

This house plan is deceptively large. It appears to be just a small family home, but on the inside, it is absolutely massive. As you make your way to this home, the first thing that you notice is that it is a very traditional home.

As you enter the home from the covered front porch, you find yourself in the open floor plan foyer and great room. To the left of the foyer you will find the formal dining room. This dining room has a gorgeous coffered ceiling and a beautiful picture window facing the front of the home.

The great room gives you a lovely brickwork fireplace flanked by built-ins and a media center. The great room opens to the grilling porch through lovely French doors. The grilling porch gives you a stamped concrete floor and a summer kitchen and has a vaulted ceiling over it. It opens to the open patio further into the property.

From the great room, you can move around the wall with the fireplace and find bedrooms 2, 3 and 4. Bedrooms 2 and 3 share a connected bathroom and bedroom 4 has its own in-suite bathroom. Bedrooms 2 and 4 each have a lovely area built into the window seat with bookshelves on each side. Which is a book lovers dream. Bedroom 4 has its own entrance to the grilling porch through its bathroom.

On the other side of the great room, you will find the combination breakfast room and kitchen. This kitchen also gives you an arched entryway to the dining room on the front of the home. The kitchen gives you a large pantry and lots of counter space. There is also a large kitchen island with seating for 4. The breakfast room has windows on 2 of the walls and an entrance to the covered porch on the side of the home.

The laundry room and garage are also down this way. The laundry room can double as a hobby room and has spectacular space for any thing that you may need it for. There is also a bathroom nestled between the kitchen and the stairs to the second floor.

Moving past the stairs you find yourself in the massive master suite. The master bedroom features French doors that open onto the grilling porch on the rear of the home. It also gives you a gorgeous detailed ceiling. French doors lead you to the master bath where you will find all the room you will ever need.

The master bath features a large whirlpool tub and huge shower with his and hers walk-in closets. Don’t forget about the safe room! It’s found just through his closet.
