House Plan Spotlight: Contemporary Modern Style

Clean lines, stunning views from a multitude of windows, and spacious rooms – all of these are earmarks of a Contemporary Modern home. Here at Nelson Design Group, we have many examples of this style of home. Let’s look at some of them.

What makes a Contemporary Modern home?

Contemporary Modern homes are actually two sides of the same coin. Modern homes were inspired by the Modernist Movement from 1890 until the mid-1960. This movement moved away from traditional and sought to redefine how we viewed the world.

This brought about a drastic change in art, literature, science and architecture. Some of the notable people in this movement were Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud.

Modern architecture moved away from the traditional brick and mortar square shaped home. Instead it leaned heavily on the materials being used to build the new buildings and drew away from the traditional shapes that were often used in buildings.

Gone were the walls with only a few windows. Now you had windows in every available space. Gone were the traditional home spaces with walls between every room. Open floor plans and spacious multipurpose rooms were the new way to go.

Modern architecture leaned heavily on cubes and incorporated steel, plastic and artificial materials into the décor. Contemporary architecture, while having the same basic ideas for open floorplans and spacious rooms, decorated with more natural ideas. Shapes were based on things that you would find in nature.

While Modern architecture leaned more toward black, grey and white, Contemporary went with more organic colors. It’s easy to call them one and the same, but they can be quite different depending on décor and materials used.

Preston Drive (SMN 1005)

This 3 bedroom, 2 baths home exemplifies the Contemporary Modern Style. This design features a mixture of natural elements on the exterior of the home including stucco, stone, brick and horizontal wood siding. This mixture gives this home phenomenal curb appear.

As you walk up to the home, you are greeted by a covered front porch and double entry doors. This would be a perfect place for some of those large French doors from Panda Windows and Doors. Once you enter the home you find yourself in a spacious, open floor plan.

Here the Great Room, Kitchen and Dining Area are all in the same room. The Great Room area features a large stone fireplace and built in bookshelves on either side.

The kitchen features a large floating island to “separate" the space between the kitchen and the Great Room. A Pantry is conveniently located off of the kitchen area. As you move toward the hallway, you’ll pass the open Dining Area. The Dining Area is dominated by a series of windows that will let in an amazing amount of light.

As you move down the hallway you’ll pass the two bedrooms and linen closet. Each bedroom has access to its own closet and the Jack and Jill bathroom between them. At the end of the hallway you’ll find the Master Suite. This spacious room has its own private entrance to a small back porch. The adjoining Master Bath features double sinks and an enormous walk in shower as well as access to two walk in closets.

Moving out of the Master Bath, you’ll find your way to a large Laundry Area with room for your utilities. Coming from the Laundry Room, you enter a Kid’s Nook with built in shelving that can double as a Mudroom. From there you step right back into the Great Room/Kitchen/Dining Area.

Rounding this incredible design out is a massive outdoor living area with a built in area for a grill and storage for all those things that you need when you are entertaining outside. This gorgeous plan by designer Seth M. Nelson is sure to please any lover of the Contemporary Modern style.

Appalachian Retreat (MEN 5056)

This home is designed to give you all the amenities of city living in a rural setting. Our Appalachian Retreat plan is a contemporary mountain home with tons of space and character for everyone to enjoy. This home has nearly 4,000 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. This home rounds out with a 2 car garage with its own entrance to the home.

You approach the front of the home and are greeted by a large covered front porch. From there you enter the home through the foyer with expansive vaulted ceilings. The vaulted ceilings continue throughout much of the home.

If you step through the centrally located Hallway and into the Great Room you will see those same vaulted ceilings and a natural stone half wall between the Great Room and the Kitchen Area. The Great Room features a large pass thru fireplace that connects with the Breakfast Nook in the Kitchen Area. The Kitchen features a pantry and a large island for entertaining and cooking.

Moving through the Kitchen, you find yourself in a large screened porch that opens up onto a grilling porch. As you walk around the outside of the home you will find that the large deck covers the entire back portion of the home and opens into the Master Suite through gorgeous French doors. This massive deck would be perfect for MoistureShield and their marine proof products.

The Master Bath contains a whirlpool tub and separate shower. Also included on this floor is a Laundry Room, Mudroom area, Dining Room and Office space.

And that was just the main floor! Just inside the door of the foyer you find a set of stairs that lead you down into the basement area. The stairs almost immediately open up into a large Game Room area with a built in bar and small kitchen area. The rest of the basement contains Bedrooms 2 and 3 with adjoining Jack and Jill bathrooms. It also has plenty of room for storage and a Safe Room.

Meridian Cove (NDG 1153)

This stunning plan has amazing curb appeal that just screams Contemporary Modern. This home features over 3,000 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. This plan gives you a 3 car garage for ample parking and storage space. This plan also features photos of a home that has already been built, giving you a glimpse into your future if you decide to build this plan. And who wouldn’t?

Walking up to this home you are greeted by a covered octagonal front porch that opens immediately into a vaulted foyer. To the right of the foyer, you have the staircase that takes you to the second floor and just past those an office space with gorgeous French doors opening into the Master Suite.

The Master Suite features recessed wall lights and opens into the Master Bath with a glass shower, whirlpool tub and his and hers walk in closets. A second French door leads from the Master Suite into the Great Room with a featured gas fireplace.

From the Great Room you can step up into the Kitchen. This gives the Kitchen definition. And rightly so! The Kitchen is the heart of the home. This one features room for a pantry and a large island that can seat 4. From the Kitchen you can look out the wall of windows into a small porch on the rear of the home.

Stepping down from the Kitchen you find yourself in an open floor plan that contains a Dining Room, Breakfast Nook and Hearth Room all closely nestled to the Kitchen. The Dining Room features columns and a wet bar. The Hearth Room, aptly named, features a large fireplace and access to the small porch on the rear of the home.

It also gives you access to the half bath and laundry area as well as the Garages. The large Breakfast Room features Atrium Doors which just beg for the folding doors from Panda Windows and Doors. These doors open onto the Patio and Garden Area on the side of the home. But have no fear for nosy neighbors; this area is enclosed in a stucco/brick wall.

And this was just the main floor, if you take the stairs near the foyer to the second floor you find yourself in a small hallway with a bedroom on each side. These large airy rooms, perfect for kids and teenagers, share a Jack and Jill adjoining bathroom.

This plan also features an absolutely enormous Attic Storage Area that can be accessed through one of the bedrooms. No rickety attic ladder here. This is a great plan for families or those who love to entertain.

Adirondack Place (MEN 5068)

This beautiful home gives you over 2,000 square feet of living area with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths. This home features timber trusses, a metal roof and a gorgeous stone lining the outside. Coming in from the entryway you enter an open floor plan with a Great Room, Dining Room and Kitchen area.

The Great Room features a large stone work fireplace and gives the whole area a warm cozy feel. The Kitchen features a large high bar with room for four to sit comfortably while entertaining.

As you move down the hall from the open area you take a turn into the Master Suite with its adjoining Master Bath. The Master Suite features vaulted ceilings while the Master Bath gives you an enormous walk in shower. The walk in closet is accessed through the bathroom. No more hunting for clothes with wet dripping hair.

Just outside of the Master Suite is a laundry area and the half bath. The half bath is convenient to both the kitchen and the bedroom areas.

Moving down the hall you find Bedroom 2 and 3. The bedrooms both feature a closet with a sliding barn door to give you that country feel. They also feature a window seat, not just in both bedrooms, but in the hallway as well. These window seats give you a comfy place to read or listen to music and enjoy the scenery on those days when you just don’t want to go outside. Both bedrooms also have access to an adjoining bathroom. The first floor is completed by a grilling porch just outside of the Great Room.

The basement, which is accessed by the stairs located between the Master Suite and Kitchen, opens up into a large Game Room with an attached full bath with a walk in shower. A covered porch gives you the perfect place to sit in the shade on those super-hot summer days. Space for a refrigerator and sink makes this the perfect multi use space.
