Weather Prep Week: Mudrooms

Fall is here and the temperatures are dropping, thank goodness. I don’t know how much longer I could have taken all of that heat. Here in the south, fall is when the rain starts coming in. And when it starts turning colder, we get freezing rain. So, we know about mud. We know about the muckiness that trails you in like a hungry cat and collects on the bottoms of your shoes.

So how do you deal with this situation? How do you keep your home looking fresh and beautiful when half the yard just came in with every squelching step? What if there was a room that was specifically designed to handle all of that mess and the extra clothes that come with the cooler weather? Ah, yes, the mighty mudroom has come to the rescue.

Mudrooms

These are versatile spaces that can either be their own dedicated space or part of another space that is being used in more than one way. Our back door comes directly into our laundry room and this has become our mudroom during the winter and colder months. It lets us hang our coats up and take our shoes off without having to track through the carpet.

Serenity Farms (MEN 5185)

This charming farmhouse gives you plenty of reasons to love it. AT just over 3,400 square feet of living space, this traditional house plan gives you 4 bedrooms with 4 full baths. Unlike most traditional farmhouse style house plans, this plan gives you a 3-bay garage for your modern horse and carriage. With a dynamic wraparound covered porch, this home exudes style and that old-fashioned charm.

As you approach the home, the first thing you notice is the traditional covered porch that wraps around the side. This porch just begs for you to come and “sit a spell" with a tall glass of sweet, iced tea.

Entering the home, you immediately find yourself in the great room. This room features a large brickwork, gas fireplace and houses the stairs to the second level. From the great room you can move into the dining room and kitchen area.

This large space gives you plenty of room for entertaining or for those close family meals. The dining room features a large bank of windows that face the side of the home. The kitchen gives you long countertops with an island that is centrally located with seating for 4. The kitchen also features a large, corner pantry that is perfect for storing the winter necessities.

From the kitchen you can make your way outside to the covered, grilling porch. This lovely space gives you a perfect place to cook and entertain outside. From the kitchen, you can also make your way to the office located on the rear of the home.

This hall also gives you access to bedroom number 2 and a large craft room that is perfect for the Martha Stewart in your life. Here you will also find the laundry room and the adjoining mudroom. This mudroom is perfect because it allows you to come into the home directly from the garage.

From the great room, you find yourself in the master suite. This large room gives you beautiful coffered ceilings and two single casement windows that face the front of the home. Moving towards the master bath, you will find two walk-in closets on either side of a short hallway. This bathroom gives you an enormous shower and linen closet.

The other side of the home gives you space for a second kitchen with its own pantry and wrap around countertop. It also gives you bar seating for 6 that opens up the second great room. This is part of the in-law suite.

This area also gives you a secondary laundry area, a private entrance from the garages and access to bedrooms 3 and 4. Bedroom 3 has its own in-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. Bedroom 4 has access to the hall bathroom and a large linen closet.

The second floor gives you space for a proposed game room with its own half bath.

Auburn Dale Place (MEN 5139)

This home by award winning designer Michael E. Nelson gives you everything you need in a European style home. This plan gives you just over 2,300 square feet of living space with 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. It also features a 3-car garage. This home has wonderful curb appeal with a bay window in the front of the home as well as a wonderful roofline. As you approach this home, the first thing that you notice are the games and spires in the roofline and the carriage style garage doors. You enter the home and immediate find yourself in a large, open foyer. This gives your home grandeur from the moment you step into it.

On the right side of the foyer is the dining room with high ceilings. This room also features a large double casement window facing the front of the home. The dining room gives you plenty of space to entertain.

From the foyer, you step through the gallery and into the great room. This open floor plan combines the great room, breakfast room and kitchen. The great room features a large brickwork fireplace that dominates the left wall. It also gives you a patio opening to the screen grilling porch on the rear of the home.

The kitchen gives you plenty of counterspace and features bar seating at the island with room for 6. The breakfast room opens up to the grilling porch on the rear of the home and makes a perfect space for informal dining or simply drinking that perfect cup of coffee.

From the other side of the great room you will find the office leading to bedrooms 2 and 3. Bedroom 2 can also be used as an office and features that lovely bay window from the front of the home. You can also have a separate entrance to the garage here. Bedroom 3 features a large double casement window that faces the rear of the home. These two bedrooms both have access to the hall bathroom, and each have their own large closet area.

The other side of the home houses the master suite. This room gives you high boxed ceilings with a large double casement window facing the rear of the home. The master bath is separated from the bedroom by a pocket door and gives you room for both a free-standing tub and a tile shower with a seat. The master suite also gives you room for a large walk-in closet.

The garage lets you enter the home through the laundry area and straight into a mudroom/kid’s nook. This gives you plenty of hanging and storage space for all of your kids’ miscellaneous items. This plan also features a second-floor bonus room that is perfect for a game room or work out area.

Autumn Brook (MEN 5085)

This craftsman bungalow house plan by award winning designer Michael E. Nelson gives you just under 2,200 square feet of living space and features 3 bedrooms, 3 full baths and 1 half bath. It also has a 2-bay garage! This home gives you wonderful space and features a beautiful roofline that will immediately attract the best kind of attention. It also features a large great room and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen.

As you approach the home, the first thing that catches your eye is the roofline. It just gets better from there. You enter the home from the covered porch with brickwork columns and detailing to find yourself in the foyer with 9-foot-high ceilings. The foyer is part of an open floor plan that includes it, the dining area, the great room and kitchen.

The dining area gives you beautiful vaulted ceilings with a large picture window that faces the front of the home. All I can think of is how gorgeous a fully decorated Christmas tree would be in front of that window.

The great room features a large fireplace that dominates the right wall of the space. The great room opens up to the screened in grilling porch on the rear of the home that has a wonderful outdoor kitchen features room for your grill, a sink and bar seating for 4.

The kitchen area gives you tons of counterspace and features a large island with bar seating for five. On the right side of the plan you will find bedrooms 2 and 3. These rooms share a hall bathroom, and each have a large double casement window. They also each have a large walk-in closet.

The master suite is on the other side of the home and features majestic boxed ceilings. The master bath gives you plenty of room with both a glass shower and a free-standing tub. The master suite also features a large walk in closet.

From the garage you can enter the home and go straight to the laundry room or into the kitchen. This area gives you space for all of your things in a mudroom area with a bench with hanging storage. You can also access the half bath from here.

The second floor of the home features a bonus room with its own bathroom.
