Craftsman-Bungalow: Then and Now Part 2

There are certain things that will never go out of style. A diamond solitaire, a string of pearls, proper use of “please and thank you", etc. I would hazard that a good craftsman-bungalow house plan may be one of those things. There are homes that were built in the early part of the last century from kits that are still standing and still looking great!

So, what makes these houses last so long? What has made them stand up to the test of time? Is it the simple lines and hardy exterior materials? Or is it something on the inside? Let’s dive deep into the interiors of traditional craftsman-bungalow house plans.

Traditional Interiors of Craftsman-Bungalow Style House Plans

One of the things you have to remember about this style of home is that it was designed for the working class. These homes won’t have the massive entryways and large stately dining rooms of other homes of this time frame. Instead, you will find modest accommodations that still managed to give their owners the sense that they were kings of their very own castles.

The traditional craftsman-bungalow style house plan made you feel welcome from the moment that you stepped into it. The entryway was clearly defined and often had an arched opening leading from it to the next room. In this entry way, you were sure to find a place to hang your coat and hat, giving you the sense that you were welcome to stay for as long you as you liked.

The living room or great room of the home would be located right through the entryway and has a physical and visual connection to the front porch. Often it would be a straight shot from the living room to the front porch, giving the home a feeling of light and airiness.

Craftsman-bungalow plans traditionally have the living room, den and dining room toward the front of the home. The dining room demoted the first of the private spaces. This was a formal space so that you could entertain or host large family dinners and gatherings. It was separate from the more public living room, giving you a sense of belonging if you made it that far into the home.

Kitchens were massively important and tended to focus on what could be done as a family unit. This space was intensely private. This was the time of the nuclear family and the kitchen was the heart of this family unit. The kitchen would often include a butler’s pantry that would be a great place to store dry goods and supplies.

Dining nooks were something that was distinctly unique to the craftsman-bungalow plans. This is the ancestor to the breakfast room and was a built-in space, usually consisting of two bench seats nestled into a table built out from a wall. This space was used for informal or quick meals and was not designed to seat more than a few people at a time.

Mudrooms were an essential part of the home in a craftsman-bungalow. This room would have been placed at the rear of the house. This type of home did not traditionally have a garage of any kind, so there would not have been any protection from the elements as you came in the door. The mudroom would have been a perfect way to keep, well, mud from coming any further into the home.

Great Craftsman-Bungalow House Plans

Summer Place (MEN 5200)

This lovely rustic home gives you just over 2,600 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths. It even gives you space for a 1 car garage. This house plan gives you the look and feel of a rustic mountain cabin while maintaining that modern feel you know and love from Nelson Design Group. This two-story home features a master suite on the first level and additional bedrooms on the second level with a balcony that overlooks the great room with its brick work fireplace.

The first thing that you notice about this home is the front porch with its beautiful stonework columns. This gives you that cabin/rustic feel as soon as you approach the home. It also makes me want to kick back and relax with a warm cup of coffee and watch the birds.

As you step into the home from the covered porch, you find yourself in the foyer. This room is open to the second story and gives the look of a large space as soon as you walk into the home. To your right is one of the bedrooms and a hall bathroom. This bedroom features a large double casement window that faces the front of the home.

Moving through the home, you find yourself in the great room. This room is given character with a vaulted ceiling. Like the foyer, this room is also open to the second story. This cozy room also features a large fireplace along the left wall and sliding doors that open to the covered porch on the rear of the home.

To the right of the great room, you will find the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen has a wrapping countertop that creates a reverse “c" shape. This gives you loads of counterspace to take care of all of your prep work. It also allows you to see into the dining room and creates a sort of pass through for everything to be handed over for mealtimes.

Speaking of meals, you are going to love dining in this area. It has high ceilings and large windows that face out onto the covered porch at the rear of the home. It also opens up to the screened porch. That would be perfect for those nights when you want to dine al fresco!

Off of the kitchen is a laundry area that opens up to the garage and to the back stairway to the second story. This lets you collect and distribute the laundry without a break in stride. The rest of the main floor is devoted to the master suite on the other side of the home.

The master bedroom features high ceilings and a large double casement window that faces out to the front of the home. The master bathroom gives you a large shower with a seat, his and hers sinks and a large walk in closet.

The second floor of the home gives you bedrooms 3 and 4. Both of these have large closets and awesome little window nooks that would be perfect for a play or study area. The second floor also gives you a hall bathroom and a balcony that looks down on both the foyer and the great room.

Ashland Place (MEN 5042)

This rustic style house plan gives you just over 2,400 square feet of living space with 3 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, and 1 half bath. It also gives you room for a 3-car garage for your modern horse and carriage. With a lovely covered porch and rustic detailing throughout the exterior of the home, this house plan is sure to catch the eye of anyone driving past. Inside the home you will find vaulted ceilings in the great room and kitchen and plenty of space for entertaining in both the dining room and the outdoor living grilling porch.

As you approach the home, the first thing you notice is the covered porch with its vaulted ceiling and stone pillars with rustic accents. The covered porch leads you into the foyer of the home. The foyer features a small closet that is perfect for coats and winter accessories.

To the right of the foyer is the dining room. The dining room features a high ceiling and a double casement window facing the front of the home. The dining room has a direct entrance to the kitchen area. This gives you an easy way to prep for entertaining. Stepping into the kitchen, you will find a large space with plenty of countertop to help prep those big meals. The kitchen includes a large island that has a sink and bar seating for 10. The kitchen also has a large pantry that is perfect for storage.

The kitchen and great room are separated only by the kitchen island and both feature vaulted ceilings. The great room features exposed beams and a large stonework fireplace along the left wall. The rear wall of the great room is occupied by French doors with windows on either side that lead to the outdoor living grilling porch on the rear of the home.

This outdoor living space continues the theme from the rest of the home with a vaulted ceiling and exposed timbers. It also has its own outdoor kitchen area with space for a grill.

On the left side of the great room, you will find bedrooms 2 and 3. Bedroom 3 is set up like a mini master suite. It has a rear facing window, a walk-in closet and its own in-suite bathroom. This would be perfect for an older kid or a living in relative.

Bedroom 2 features a large window that faces the front of the home, a walk in closet and optional sliding glass doors that lead into the foyer. It has access to the hall bathroom. On the other side of the home, you will find the garage, laundry room, half bath and master suite.

The garage leads directly into the kitchen via a pocket door and gives you access to a kid’s nook and a half bath. Perfect for families with kids. This same hall gives you access to the laundry room which hides behind a barn door when not being used. The laundry room gives you storage space over the hookups, a table space for folding and a sink for soaking those really bad stains.

The master suite gives you plenty of room to relax. The master bedroom features an optional door to the outdoor living area and windows that face the rear of the home. The master bath gives you both a large shower with seats and a free-standing tub to soak away your worries. Don’t forget about the walk-in closet! It’s large enough to store everything that you need.
