Meet Nic Teasley of Generation Homes

The housing industry is full of many different professionals. Homeowners are given lots of choices when it comes to the plan designer, builder, realtor, or the professional selling the fixtures for the bathroom! Like I said…lots of choices! Nelson Design Group is a national home design firm. So, we encounter builders every single day from all over the country. However, we do not recommend every builder we come in contact with. This is because we want our clients to have a builder who pays attention to the quality that goes into a home. We also want our clients to consider a builder who is familiar with Nelson Design Group plans….believe me, this makes a HUGE difference in the process. One of the builders that NDG recommends to customers is Nic Teasley of Generation Homes in TN. Generation Homes builds 5 – 10 homes per year. While Nic has only been a licensed general contractor for 4 years, he grew up in the industry and has actually been active in the industry since 2005. His partner brings even more experience to the table with close to 20 years in the industry under his belt. So what is the best advice Nic was given in the beginning of his career? “Under-promise and over-deliver. This one is still a struggle for me, but it really does help manage the expectations of both the builder and client." Nic tells about a memorable building experience: “The first new construction project I did after getting my GC license was a great learning experience. Even though I felt like I knew a lot from the previous 6 years I had spent in the industry, I spent a lot of time on the job site learning from each sub-contractor about what they did and why they did it. All that time asking questions and taking it all in helped me be a better builder today." Now that Nic has been building for a while, he can offer some advice to those just starting out. He states, “Find a builder who you look up to, and whose work you admire. Ask them lots of questions. Never be afraid to ask questions." Attention to quality is an important trait for a builder. Attention to the customer is highly important, too! In fact, the new relationship created with a customer is one of Nic’s favorite parts of building new homes. “Each and every client is such a blessing, and each project brings its own challenges. It's humbling and encouraging that clients trust me to dig into life with them and plan their dream home. The relationships created through building are one of my favorite aspects of the job." Also, Nic lists the needs of the customer as one of the key elements to his process. He states, “My main goal is serving the customer. This starts with helping them see the vision for their land and their potential house plans. Then we take the appropriate steps to get their dream home built." So, where do Nic’s customers get their plans? Nelson Design Group! “I send clients to the NDG website to browse for two separate things. First, I tell them to look strictly at elevations. What do they want their home to look like on the exterior? Second, I encourage them to not focus on the elevations, but strictly the floor plans. Which are the floor plans they like, or are there simply smaller areas they like of individual plans? From there we mesh that all together to get exactly what they want." Nic and his wife Meredith chose an NDG plan for their own home, too! They used the same process that Nic recommends to his customers for choosing their own plan. They liked the original design, but in order to love it, they needed a few modifications. (By the way…check out the beautiful photos Meredith shared with us!) Of course building his own home was another memorable experience for Nic, but a completely different one than building for a client. The biggest challenge? The choices! Nic said, “I get to build so many wonderful homes for clients and see lots of cool design choices. Because I'm exposed to so many options, it made it difficult to determine what we liked the best." In the end, the Teasley family received a plan that “was perfect for our lifestyle and unique for our family." Meredith states that they receive lots of compliments on their home! While theirs is a modified version that they do not want someone to copy exactly, they are more than happy to send people to Nelson Design Group to view the original plan. So, what does the future hold for Nic, Meredith, and their children? “I have a feeling we will build one more and then stay there for a little while and let our kids enjoy being settled for a change! I love building custom homes so Lord willing I will get to keep doing that for a long time."
